  5. § AIT International School (AITIS) Operations
: On 30th January 2012, I met with the Coordinators of the AIT International School (AITIS), Mrs. Nighat Malim and Mrs. Nirja Despande, along with the AITIS Administrative Officer, Ms. Parichat Thummachua. I was also joined in the meeting by the Head-Administration, Mrs. Izel Ann Dante. The main discussion was on the scheduled return of the AITIS to the AIT campus from its current temporary locations in Hua Hin and Bangkok vis-a-vis ongoing restoration of the AITIS building, which will most likely be completed towards the end of March 2012. I affirmed putting high importance in ensuring that health hazards and risks are minimized when AITIS operations are resumed at the AIT campus. We are expecting to receive the results of the post-sanitation tests of the air and buildings at the AIT campus, including AITIS, conducted by an independent company.

Following the confirmed return to campus on 15 February 2012 after a two-week break of the academic operations in Hua Hin, I concurred that there is no reason for AITIS to continue its operations in Hua Hin beyond 15 February 2012, and should only operate at its current temporary location in Bangkok, i.e. at St John's International School (SJIS). All AITIS students from Hua Hin may join their respective classes at AITIS at SJIS.

To allow for smooth and safe transition for AITIS students, the tasks of furnishing the ground floor classrooms to facilitate the return to the AIT campus will be completed during the AITIS mid-semester break (no classes for AITIS students) from 12 to 22 April 2012. AITIS classes will resume from 23 April 2012 at the AIT campus.

  13. § Nordic Chambers Breakfast Seminar
: On 31st January I attended the Nordic Chambers Breakfast Seminar, which was on the topic Investment Fund for Developing Countries (IFU) Reopens for Investments for Thailand during which Mr. Leo Emdal Alexandersen and Mr. Poul Weber, made a presentation on how IFU advises and invests together with Danish companies who wish to establish themselves in developing countries and emerging markets. IFU is reopening for co-investments with Danish companies in Thailand, following a decision by the Danish government to increase the Fund’s focus on emerging markets.

The Danish investment fund IFU has made investments in Thailand since 1975. However, in 2009 IFU had to stop making new investments in the country because Thailand had surpassed the income limit regulating which countries IFU can invest in.  The Danish government has now doubled the income limit, and Thailand is among the 26 countries being reopened.  Until 2009, IFU had participated in the establishment of 28 companies in Thailand.

IFU can offer both advice and financing to Danish companies wanting to set up business in developing countries and emerging markets in Asia, Africa and certain parts of Latin America. IFU’s investments are made on commercial terms in the form of share capital and loans and are made directly in a company established in the host country.  As an investor IFU is prepared to share the financial risk with a Danish company, and normally IFU is involved from the first step through the establishment and set-up of the company until it is fully consolidated. Often IFU is also represented on the board of the company.
